
Richard Baker
Richard has personally been involved in some of Labour's best achievements of the Scottish Parliament.
As a former President of Scotland's National Union of Students, and the Press Officer of Help the Aged, Richard successfully campaigned for:
Richard was elected as a regional member of the Scottish Parliament for
North East Scotland in May 2003.
Born in Edinburgh in 1974, as a graduate of Aberdeen University, he played
an important and active role in supporting the Labour party throughout his
studies where he also obtained an MA (Hons) degree in English Literature.
After completing his degree he became a Scottish Press Officer for Help
the Aged.
In this role he successfully raised the profile of the charity in the media and campaigned on a range of issues affecting older people.
This included pressing for the introduction of free personal care for older people, as well as campaigning for help for poorer pensioners and tackling fuel poverty, which is a particular problem for many older people.
Following this, Richard held the post of Scotland’s President of the National Union of Students.
NUS Scotland's work is focused on further and higher education, and the interests of students and their educational environment.
It provides a national platform for representation and campaigning, and deals with scores of organisations on a Scottish, UK and international level.
Throughout his time with the NUS he led a successful campaign to scrap tuition fees and reintroduce grants to improve access for poorer students into further and higher education.
